Koch-Funded Study Backfires:
We Really Are Warming

April 4, 2011--Physicist Richard Muller, a longtime critic of government-led climate studies who formed a UC Berkeley team to challenge the scientific consensus on global warming, unexpectedly told a congressional hearing last week that its early results show that the work of NOAA, NASA and Britain's Met Office--the three main groups that have analyzed the temperature trends underlying climate science--was "excellent....We see a global warming trend that is very similar to that previously reported by the other groups."*

 

Since taking control of the House of Representatives in January, Republicans have held numerous hearings as they seek to disempower the Environmental Protection Agency's efforts to curb greenhouse gases. This one was held by the Science and Technology Committee, whose GOP leaders have questioned the integrity of climate science.

Disappointed has to be the Berkeley project's biggest backer: the Charles G. Koch Charitable Foundation, which has $150,000 in the study, according to the Los Angeles Times. Oil and coal billionaires Charles and David Koch have invested millions of dollars to prevent curbs on the burning of fossil fuels, the largest contributor to planet-warming greenhouse gases. But Prof. Muller said the Kochs and other contributors will have no influence over the results of the study, which he plans to submit to peer-reviewed scientific journals.*
